Paddington Painters & Decorators

Stucco & garden-square frontages

A well-resolved exterior gives a converted house a coherent face to the street. For Paddington's garden-square terraces, the work begins with the whole building: the painted masonry, its finer details and the agreement behind them.

Read the elevation as a composition

Norfolk Square's listed terraces include stuccoed brickwork, projecting window details, iron balconies and basement railings. Each material asks something different of the decorating specification. The broad wall colour needs to sit comfortably with the smaller elements, while mouldings should remain legible rather than lose their edges beneath further layers of paint.

One frontage, several interests

A repaint instructed by several leaseholders needs an agreed extent before individual colour preferences are discussed. Establish whether the commission includes the upper storeys, entrance steps, lower-ground walls and each window surround. Where an agent or freeholder controls the exterior, ask them to approve the brief and identify who can accept changes. That gives residents a common document against which to review the work.

Separate repair from decoration

Peeling paint can conceal defective render, unsuitable earlier coatings or a source of moisture. The quotation should distinguish preparation for painting from repairs that need further assessment. Existing bare brick or stone should be identified and protected. The finish is selected for the actual background, with attention to compatibility and any requirements attached to the building, rather than chosen from colour alone.

Consider the view across the square

Review exterior samples from the pavement and at a distance, including where an adjoining house meets the proposed work. Westminster's guidance recognises the importance of a consistent paint scheme within formal terraces and squares. A finish that appears quiet on a small sample can read quite differently over several storeys; record the approved product, shade and sheen before that decision is repeated across the façade.

Plan access around the households

Tell us which doors, windows and basement routes are in daily use, and whether the front garden or forecourt is shared. Access equipment, deliveries and any public-highway permissions belong in the project discussion from the outset. Send a complete frontage photograph alongside close views of failing paint so the initial enquiry shows both the architectural scale and the condition of the surfaces.
